What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Stronger

November 20th, 2008

Setbacks are an inevitable part of any business. We all have to face them sooner or later. When you find a lion at your door it will either 1) destroy you, or 2) make you stronger. There is an old saying that has a ring of truth, “Whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.”

Some people let adversity destroy them. Others stand up to adversity and come out a much stronger person as a result of the experience. You can tell a lot about a person by the way they handle difficult situations. Many seemingly tough guys fold under pressure. A lot of it has to do with how you define your setback or challenge. If you admit defeat, then you’ll be defeated. If you accept that the situation is bad, but you’re determined to see it through then you have a much better chance. It’s your choice.

Bill Zanker, Founder and CEO of The Learning Annex said, “It frightening when bad things happen. I know that from personal experience. I’ve gone through some challenging rough patches in my career. But I didn’t let it destroy my confidence. In the beginning you never really know how bad it’s really going to get.

You never know how it’s going to turn out. I was in a terrible spot a few years ago. But I kept on going. And after a while it all passed. In the end it turned out great. But I didn’t know that at the time. But in my heart and my mind I defined the bad spot as merely a setback that I would recover from. This attitude made all the difference, and helped me come through it all in flying colors.”
